Chapter 9
When Rob had called Maddie he told her the meeting on their new account was running late and not to wait for dinner. He had sounded sincere and her usually sharp instincts had remained passive.
So why, after fewer than three months of marriage, was she pacing her apartment at two in the morning with tears in her eyes.
She was still wide awake at sunrise, propped up against pillows, an unread book on her lap and the cat warm against her leg. By then disbelief had morphed into anxiety and churning humiliation. She glanced at the clock having no doubt, judging by his last performance that heâd be showing up shortly.
As before, she wondered briefly if something terrible had happened to him. Not something, more likely someone. She went into the kitchen and poured a glass of orange juice, trying to recall if there was something she had done that had made him do this, whatever âthisâ was. There had been no real problems that they hadnât been able to work out and they seldom argued. They made love every night so what was he seeking that she couldnât give him?
Hearing the lock turn, she went back into the bedroom and sat on the bed.
âHow could you?â she asked, unable to stop the tears running down her face.
He shook his head, his voice placating. âI didnât do anything, Maddie. I swear to you that all I did was get drunk and ended up sleeping it off at the office. Iâm sorry.â
He sat down next to her, putting his arm tentatively around her shoulder. She shrugged him off and moved away. âWhatâs going on here Rob? How can you say you love me and then stay out all night without even calling? Or maybe it would be better to ask, why is it you stay out all night at all?â
âMaddie,â he pleaded. âIt just happened, I didnât plan it. I love you and I had no intention of hurting you. After the meeting I went out for a few drinks with some of the guys and that led to a few more. You know how it goes; suddenly it was three in the morning and we were all drunk. It was easier to go back to the office and camp out there. I must have passed out.â
She got off the bed and faced him. âNo. I donât know how it goes. You never pass out when youâre with me, so why does it only happen when youâre out with the guys? Come to think of it, has there ever been one night that you were too drunk to make love? So maybe itâs more than just the guys or perhaps you should stop drinking so muchâit seems to be getting in the way of this relationship.â Although she had begun talking quietly, she was practically shouting by the end of it. She saw his eyes flicker and knew she had struck a nerve. But why should she suffer because he had one, a few, or even many too many drinks.
